Profile

Dr. Deborah Caldwell is Director of Instrumental Studies and Assistant Professor of Music at Erskine College. She conducts Sinfonia and Jazz Band in addition to teaching applied trumpet, music theory, and music history courses. Before joining the faculty of Erskine in 2019, she worked as an adjunct instructor at Frostburg State University in Western Maryland.  

A native of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Dr. Caldwell earned her Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Georgia where she studied with Mr. Philip Smith. She also earned degrees from Kansas State University (studying with Dr. Gary Mortenson) and Ouachita Baptist University (studying with Dr. Craig Hamilton). During her schooling, she worked at Interlochen Arts Camp and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and completed band internships in Texas and South Korea. 

Publications and Performances

Along with publishing articles in the International Trumpet Guild Journal, Dr. Caldwell has enjoyed performing and competing in various ensembles and competitions (see Media-Caldwell for a sampling of her recordings). 

Personal Interests

When she is not doing music-related activities, Dr. Caldwell enjoys photography, jigsaw puzzles, and travel. She has performed in more than seven countries and is grateful for opportunities to bring people together through music.
