Kara McAlister studied accounting and economics as an undergraduate. She was an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC before becoming the Vice President of Finance and Reimbursement at South Carolina Baptist Ministries for the Aging, Inc. She served as a tax manager at Elliott Davis, LLC. For the last fourteen years, she has been an accounting faculty member at Piedmont Technical College.

She has served as President of the YMCA of Laurens, the Treasurer of the Laurens County Hospital Foundation Board, and the Treasurer of the Laurens County Rotary Club and the United Way of Laurens County.
